Fast, Fierce & Fun: Roller Derby Rivalry at Superordinary
I’ve had going to a live roller derby event on my bucket list for a while, and it did not disappoint — it exceeded my expectations! Fast skates, hard hits, a roaring crowd and a proper rivalry — this was definitely not our usual quiet weekend adventure!
π Our First Impressions
The event was held at Superordinary Brisbane, which was a great space for all the action, especially in September when it's cooler. We've been to Superordinary before in summer, and the heat was not a good time — haha.
It's easy to find, has ample free parking, and outside you can look over the beautiful Brisbane River and city lights.
Walking in, I already felt like I'd found my people. The atmosphere was very welcoming and friendly, and the place was buzzing with excitement. There was even a live band!
One of the skaters selling raffle tickets kindly explained how the sport worked for us and gave us a flyer explaining the game as well.
I absolutely loved that the derby teams included people of different ages, genders and body types. That, to me, was absolute π₯ and amazing to see.
This match was between the Misfits and Devotchkas!
πΌ What is Roller Derby?
How the Game WorksStructure: A game (called a bout) lasts 60 minutes. It is split into two 30-minute halves. Each half is broken into short plays called jams that last up to two minutes.
The Teams: Each team puts five skaters on the track during a jam: four blockers and one jammer.
The Pack: The blockers from both teams skate together as a group called the pack.
The Jammer: The jammer wears a helmet cover with a star. They score points for their team.
Scoring Points
The First Pass: Jammers start behind the pack. On the first pass, they fight to break through the pack. The first jammer to legally break through becomes the lead jammer.
Earning Points: Once past the pack on the initial trip, jammers score one point for every opposing blocker they pass or lap on subsequent passes around the track.
Offense and Defense: Players play offense and defense at the same time. Blockers try to stop the opposing jammer while helping their own jammer push through.
π₯ The Rivalry Begins
Roller derby is so enthralling that you don't want to look away and miss any of it. The sheer determination of the jammers, the moves they pull off to get through the pack, the blockers working together, the strategies they use, and then seeing a jammer score while everyone goes wild — it's so captivating!
I'm personally not into "sports" in the typical sense, but I do love extreme sports. Roller derby definitely held my attention, and we stayed for the entire game.
And honestly, how could we leave when the scores were so insanely close and the winning margin ended up being just ONE point?!
It was EPIC!
πΏ Food, drinks & facilities
I think we supported the event in every possible way! π I bought a delicious Caramilk blondie from the bake sale, had dinner from the sausage sizzle, bought raffle tickets AND bought myself a Brisbane City Rollers shirt.
All for under $50!
The whole night was so affordable and fun, especially for those of us on a pension, that I would 100% do this again.
I couldn't find any Companion Card information on the event ticket page, so I just paid the extra $10 for my support worker. At that price, it was still an incredibly affordable night out. Kids under 12 were also free!
π§‘π Our Final Thoughts ππ§‘
10/10 — Would go again!
Roller derby is perfect for alternative sports fans, anyone looking for a high-energy night out, or those wanting to experience something a little different in Brisbane.
Just keep the noise and crowds in mind when considering your own accessibility or sensory needs. The seating was also pretty hard, so next time I'm bringing a cushion for a bit more comfort!
But it was totally worth it for the great vibes, welcoming atmosphere, exciting gameplay and beautiful sportsmanship we witnessed.
Definitely give it a go!

♿ Companion Card
It usually is accepted at Superordinary (the venue), but I could not find Companion Card on the ticket page for the event, so I just paid the extra $10. It could possibly still accept Companion Card, so I would ask Brisbane City Rollers next time they host there.π Customer Service
Amazing! Everyone was friendly, helpful and approachable.π§π¦½ Wheelchair Access
π Parking & Transport
π Security
As a night time, family-friendly event, we felt safe and comfortable throughout our visit. There is great lighting inside and out of the venue. Parking is right next to the venue.πΎ Pet Policy
Certified assistance animals are always welcome.π§ Quiet Spaces
There are spaces outside of the venue, where the food trucks usually are, to take some respite from the crowds and noise and look over the beautiful river.π Food Options
There was a bake sale and a sausage sizzle going. We ate ours before the derby started, so we didn't need to line up when it got busier later haha. There is also the licensed bar inside.π₯ Crowds
We never felt crowded during our visit despite there being a decent amount of people there. It was just right. Enough to have a fantastic atmosphere, but not overwhelming and wanting to escape!Information correct at the time of the event on 19 September 2026.
