A Gothic Gathering in the Park: Our Brisbane Alternative Picnic Adventure

If you've ever wondered what happens when hundreds of people dressed in spectacular gothic and alternative fashion gather for a relaxing afternoon, the Brisbane Gothic & Alternative Picnic is exactly that—and so much more.

Held in a welcoming park setting, this community event brings together people from all walks of alternative culture, from traditional goths and metalheads to punks, emos and everything in between. It's a celebration of individuality, creativity and finding a place where everyone can simply be themselves.

We recently attended the picnic for the first time, and it quickly became one of the most welcoming and visually stunning community events we've experienced. Here's a look at what made the day so memorable!

The Atmosphere

I found this event similar to Pride events—everyone was so welcoming, inclusive and friendly. It had such a relaxing and positive vibe. Pair that with a beautiful Brisbane winter's day that was sunny but not scorching, and it was absolute bliss.

There was such a beautiful mix of gothic fashion, Victorian attire, cyber goths, metalheads, punks, emos, lolitas, faes and alternative styles. People-watching was one of my favourite parts of the day, especially seeing the incredible ensembles people had put together. Victorian dresses, corsets, lace, leather, latex, platform boots, elaborate makeup and chunky accessories were everywhere. I was absolutely loving it!

The event also had a wonderful family-friendly atmosphere, which I think was helped by it being alcohol-free. The roaming photographers added to the fun, with people posing against the beautiful natural backdrops throughout the park.

Activities & Entertainment

Alongside the free picnic were the markets, which you could enter for a small fee. Entry helped raise funds for Hummingbird House—Queensland's only children's hospice—so you were also supporting a wonderful cause.

We loved the free stickers, the raffles we could enter, and seeing just how many amazing prizes were up for grabs! My sister and I also found the colouring-in competition incredibly relaxing while sitting under a big shady tree. Simply enjoying each other's company and slowing down for a while was wonderful.

There were also prizes awarded for Best Dressed and Best Picnic Setup, which added another fun element to the day.

1. Setting up our goth-themed picnic area.
2. Admiring everyone's incredible outfits.
3. Browsing the markets and bringing home a few "accidental" purchases.
4. Taking photos with the beautiful backdrop provided.
5. Colouring in and entering the raffles.

Would We Go Again?

Absolutely!

It gives me the perfect excuse to dress up, spend time with like-minded people and experience such a welcoming community in beautiful surroundings. I also love that it's an annual event—and even better, they recognise the Companion Card. Win-win!

The Brisbane Gothic & Alternative Picnic is fantastic for all ages, and I highly recommend it. It was so wholesome seeing mothers and daughters, families, friendship groups, and people of all ages coming together to enjoy such a unique community event.

As a daytime, family-friendly event, we felt safe and comfortable throughout our time there.

I'm unsure whether pets are permitted, so I'd recommend contacting the event organisers for the most up-to-date information. Thinking back, I don't actually recall seeing any pets during the event.

🧘 Quiet Spaces

There are plenty of quiet spots throughout the park where you can relax away from the crowds.

🍔 Food Options

There was one food truck and one coffee van available. We packed our own delicious picnic to enjoy instead.

👥 Crowds

Despite how many people attended, it never felt overly crowded or uncomfortable. The only busier area was the markets during peak times. There was also plenty of shade throughout the park, making it easy to find a comfortable place to sit and relax.
