Op shopping is an awesome inclusive outing — relaxed, affordable, and great for sensory-friendly browsing! It’s easy to tailor the experience to your mood, energy level, and support needs. This makes for a wonderful day out with your support worker and in the community. Plus, you’re supporting great charities while you shop, and you can donate items you’ve been meaning to clear out.

We were a little short on time due to other errands and appointments, but we still managed to sneak in a few shops before our shift together ended. It was SO worth it!

Bonding Beyond the Bargains

Shopping together is not only fun — it helps build a great rapport with your support worker. Browsing together, sharing fashion inspiration, pointing out hobbies or crafts you spot in-store, and laughing over nostalgic items creates a relaxed and enjoyable connection.

We kept finding things we hadn’t seen in years. Memories sparked like, “Oh, we had this when we were little!” or “We used to have this punch bowl!” It becomes a trip down memory lane without even trying.

Imagining outfits, trying on clothes, or hunting for pieces for DIY projects just adds to the fun. I’m definitely going back next time I need supplies for crafting because you can get them so much cheaper from an op shop.

The Thrill of the Treasure Hunt

My roommate had a Christmas wish list, so we both looked through hundreds of DVDs to see if any from his list were there. You won’t believe it — we found THREE! We priced these elsewhere, and they were selling them for $30 to $50 each because they’re rare or out of production. We got them for $3–$5, and they look brand new!

We were cheering, hugging, and so excited — haha! They’re wrapped under our tree right now!

My Favourite Finds of the Day

On top of the DVDs, I was thrilled to find an awesome set of glasses for only $2! I’d been eyeing off the mini trifle bowls at Woolworths — $18 for a set of four — and these look perfect for Christmas trifles at a fraction of the price. I can’t wait to make them all pretty and delicious!

How to Make Your Op Shop Adventure Extra Fun

You can make your outing even more enjoyable by setting some fun challenges, like finding the weirdest item or the best outfit under $10. Take photos of any fabulous finds, and stop for a coffee or lunch between shops to keep the day relaxed.

If you're Christmas shopping, many op shops also sell gift bags, decorations, or even items perfect for curated gift packs. Imagine gifting someone a full year of reading — 12 books wrapped individually using donated gift wrap and ribbon! There are so many creative possibilities if you explore with an open mind.

I had forgotten just how many fantastic treasures you can find at an op shop. We tend to fall into the habit of “just grabbing it cheap at Kmart,” without realising how much cheaper — and more fun — it is to explore a second-hand store instead.

One of The Most Intense Live Performances I’ve Seen in Queensland Was in Redcliffe

When I heard a Japanese drumming performance was coming to Redcliffe, I was so excited. I had seen taiko drumming at the Sake Festival and Matsuri Brisbane before, so I already knew I really enjoyed it. What most people think is that it’s a calm, serene cultural experience—and it is—but it can also feel more like a rock concert mixed with theatre and athletic performance. It’s truly memorable. Redcliffe Entertainment Centre I hadn’t been here before, despite it being so easy to get to. The parking is free and plentiful. We got there quite early (just anxiety things), and the traffic was fantastic (unlike Brisbane and getting to QPAC). My only thought was that I wished the exterior lighting had been turned on earlier. There are many dinner options close by, including food available inside the venue itself, which surprised me.
